Does this Squirrel Know More About Lemons than You?

This little guy has the right idea. The tart lemon is an often-overlooked source of good-for-you nutrients.

You probably already know that lemons are packed with vitamin C, but did you know they’re also a great source of antioxidants, fiber, vitamin B6, iron and potassium?

In fact, the lemon has long been used as a natural remedy for everything from heart troubles to digestion.

Following are the top five home remedy uses for lemons and their juice.

* Digestion aid – said to help resolve constipation and diarrhea

* Cancer-fighter – may help fight oral cancer and leukemia

* Sore-throat soother – antibacterial properties can help knock out the bugs causing the pain

* Weight-loss accelerator – may suppress appetite and help boost metabolism

* Insect-bite relief – rubbing over the bite can help relieve the itch and discomfort

Of course this is just the tip of the lemon-flavored iceberg. Please share your favorite lemon cures in the comments section below.

So how do you explain the squirrel at our place that steals and eats the charcoal out of our grill? He grabs the scraps of foil and chews off the burnt charcoal until it is completely gone, then gets another piece.

Another great use for lemons is for people who have low levels of stomach acid and get "heartburn", when the "heartburn" comes on, in most cases, sucking on a lemon and swallowing the juice will relieve the "heartburn" symptoms within a few minutes. This is because for most people who get "heartburn", their stomach does not produce enough hydrochloric acid especially as one ages. Consequently, their esophageal valve which is above their stomach and suppose to stay shut between the esophagus (upper food tube) and the stomach, the valve sometimes will spasm and open up causing some of the gastric juices to spray upwards into the esophagus which has a delicate inner linning. When that linning get irritated by some of the small amount of gastric juice which contains small amounts of hydrochloric acid, you feel "heartburn". So by adding some lemon juice to your stomach by swallowing the lemon juice, the stomach that has not enough stomach acid sees more acid being added to it and stops the upper valve from opening up or spasming. Remedies like this are counter intuitive but it really works based on the above reasons.

The most amazing effect I have personally felt about lemons, is weight loss. Started taking lemons, squeezed, and diluted in warm water, with a tea spoon of honey, first thing in the morning, for the past 6 months. Decided to try adding lemons to my daily feeding regimen when I learnt of it's alkalizing effect. I have dropped 5-6kg since then! I just decided, last week to reduce the frequency to every other day, so I don't literally dry up, because I don't really have a weight problem. So folks, you want to shed weight without much effort, add lemon to whatever else you're doing to achieve it.

LOVE the lemon suggestions...please keep them coming!

Anonymous 3 your "counter intuitive" heartburn tip is fascinating. Contrary to popular thought many natural health docs say that heartburn is more often than not a LOW stomach acid problem...as opposed to an overproduction. Perhaps this is why this "lemon cure" works so well.

Thanks for sharing your story Ben. It seems that you are not alone I have read quite a few accounts of lemons (and apple cider vinegar) doing incredible things for weight loss.

Rett thanks for the liver cleanse tip. Good to know! And I have to agree that he is adorable. We live in the city, but have PLENTY of our own squirrels to keep us (and the cat) entertained.

Thanks everyone!

We use lemons freshly squeezed to combat poison ivy and poison oak as it will wipe them out within a day or two. Works like a charm. No need for doctor visits or calamine lotion, just dab freshly reamed juice on all areas affected and within a day your symptoms will be 50% gone. Apply once in morning and once at night and you will clear up.
