It's Only a Tylenol?
Oh, it's only a Tylenol!" These are the famous last words of thousands of over the counter pain pill users. While so much emphasis is placed on the dangers of prescription pain pills, most people don't realize that OTC drugs are actually deadly, and quite easily abused. Acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol and countless other OTC medications, is responsible for hundreds of deaths per year due to liver toxicity. And it's easier than ever to overdose on these OTC meds, since each year a dozen or more medications are introduced that contain high levels of the compound. Here's a short list of the OTC medications that contain acetaminophen:
- Actifed
- Alka-Seltzer Plus
- Anacin
- Benadryl
- Contac
- Dimetapp
- Feverall
- Goody's Powders
- Midol
- NyQuil®/DayQuil,
- Pamprin
- Robitussin
- Sinutab Sinus
- Sudafed
- Tavist
- TheraFlu
- Tylenol
- Vicks VapoRub
And these are just the OTC meds. Popular prescription pills like Percocet and Vicodin are chock full of the stuff! Acetaminophen has caused so much grief that the FDA was finally forced to man up and stamp the offending OTC products with the industry dreaded "black box warning". And in a recent move, the FDA advisory panel just voted to recommend a ban on Percocet and Vicodin. Thanks FDA, fashionably late as usual! .
