Looking to Lose a Little Weight? Pop a Ritalin!

Share/Save/Bookmark

Parents are starting to realize how dangerous ADHD drugs can be—Adderall may cause a pounding or uneven heartbeat and hallucinations, and Ritalin (which may be habit- forming) may cause aggressive behavior and dangerously high blood pressure. And that's just the tip of the iceberg on both drugs.

So, increasingly, parents have been turning to alternative treatments for their children. Which is great.

But it left Big Pharma scrambling for a new target.

They've set their sights on an easy target—people desperate to lose weight. That's right—repackage ADHD drugs as weight loss aids, push them on doctors, and watch the sales figures go up. No proof that it works (or that it's safe) necessary!

So doctors are now prescribing drugs that can raise your heart rate and your blood pressure to a group of people who are most likely already dealing with these very conditions.

They might as well just write out a prescription for a heart attack.

And where is the FDA in all this? Well, I haven't heard a peep.

So while the FDA attacks life-saving natural cures like bioidentical thyroid replacement ("Natural thyroid user? Not if the FDA has their way," 9/14/09), they're just fine turning a blind eye here.

Big Pharma is handing out dangerous drugs for a condition they were never intended for? No problem!

Seems to me their priorities are more than just a little out of whack.
