Stressed? Help Yourself...

Good old stress. I thought it was time to blog again about this always 'in style' topic of health. The fact is, at some point in our lives (or in our day!) we all experience some form of 'stress' - be it physical, emotional or chemical (and often times a combination of all three!) So here are a few excellent tips on helping soothe your stress from a nutritional perspective.

Remember, always consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner to determine which supplements are right for you, particularly if ou have a medical condition or are taking prescription medication.

Here are three great nutritional supplements that are tried, test and true for stress:

1. B Vitamins

B complex vitamins are used in energy production (we need that!) However, when under stress - B vitamins are used at a faster rate compared to normal. This often leads to fatigue, stomach upset and lowered immunity (ie. notice how people 'catch' a cold when they are sick - ie. think of students during exam periods!). Taking a B complex supplement can help support energy production and thus reduce the effects of stress by correcting the stress-related nutrient imbalances.

2. Valerian

Valerian root is a herbal remedy that is very popular for calming and helping restore normal sleep patterns in those who are stressed, overworked and anxious. It is a natural sleep aid that can help to relieve the nervous tension and promote a restful sleep. Compared to the pharmaceutical counterparts, this is non-addictive and does not leave you groggy in the morning. Its also great in combination with other vit/minerals (ie. Magnesium - to help relax muscles).

3. Siberian Ginseng

Great herbal remedy used to increase general resistance to all forms of stress. Its active compound, eleutherosides (good thing blogs don't have me pronouncing these words!) act on the adrenal glands - those are the glands that release your stress hormones (ie. adrenalin!). Chronic stress usually depletes these hormones (after a while your adrenals get tired of pumping out stress hormones all the time and become 'pooped' themselves!) - this can lead to fatgue and a decrease in energy. Siberian Ginseng can help to support the normal functioning of the adrenals. Pretty cool. Of note, Ginseng should be taking up to three months followed by a two to three week break.

Hope these tips help you get stress hardy and stay vibrant!
