Tiny secret boosts mood and busts stress

Many people turn to chocolate when they’re feeling blue. But a recent study suggests they might be better off reaching for something smaller… much, much smaller.

In the past, I’ve written to you about how probiotics – the friendly bacteria in your gut – can boost your health…

  • Probiotics aid digestion
  • They support immune system health
  • They even enhance your body’s ability to get rid of toxins

New research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, may have just confirmed another benefit of these helpful bacteria.

For several years, scientists have suspected that probiotic bacteria can affect your moods. And a number of studies seem to back this up.

For example, British researchers split 132 people into 2 groups. One group got a daily drink with added probiotics. The 2nd group got an inactive placebo. In the probiotic group, those who felt the worst when the study began felt a lot better within 3 weeks. But the moodiest people in the placebo group didn’t feel any better.(1)

More recently, a Canadian team gave either probiotics or a placebo to a group of people with anxiety issues for 2 months. The probiotics group wound up calmer and less anxious. Again, the placebo group didn’t improve.(2)

But no one really understood how bacteria living way down in your gut could make a difference in your mood and attitude. This new study may provide the answer.

Scientists added probiotic bacteria to the diet of a group of mice. Another group of mice got the same diet – but without the probiotics.

The behavior of the probiotic-fed mice changed. They showed less stress. They were less likely to become moody or blue than the other mice. And they had lower levels of corticosterone – a hormone linked to high stress levels.(3)

Feeding the mice probiotics also changed the number of receptors for GABA – the brain’s top “calming” messenger – in multiple areas of the brain.

These researchers discovered the probiotics stimulated the vagus nerve – one of your body’s major nerves. And these “messages” triggered physical and chemical changes in the mice’s brains.

Changes that calmed anxious feelings, lowered stress and produced more positive moods.

We’ve already seen similar effects in people taking probiotics. So it’s reasonable to think they work the same way in humans, too.

But how do you take advantage of this benefit?

Yogurt is the best-known source probiotics. But most yogurt products are loaded with sugars – and many have chemical additives, too. So I don’t recommend them as a regular source of healthy bacteria.

Plain yogurt with live, active cultures is a pretty good probiotic source. But plain yogurt is too sour for many people. It takes some getting used to.

That’s why I recommend taking a probiotic supplement. A good probiotic supplement delivers far more friendly bacteria than yogurt… without the unpleasant taste.

The best probiotic supplements also contain prebiotics.

Prebiotics are fibers your body can’t digest… but that good bacteria can. In fact, they’re the top food choice for the healthy bacteria living in your gut. Providing their favorite food helps ensure more of these good bacteria will survive – and thrive – in your gut.

Where they just may help you feel calmer, less anxious and more upbeat.

One way to take a probiotic is to open the capsule, and put it in the yogurt and stir it. This helps spread the probiotic evenly through the intestines, assuming it survives the stomach.

HOWEVER, you cannot prove the theory of "mood" increase with me. I had a bad case of Candida. I took probiotics to clear that up and it worked very well. Over the years, I have many bottles of 15 strain 35 billion colony forming units. I took enough to pretty much replenish my gut bacteria, and I still take a probiotic supplement. I had TONS of Yogurt. Now I am dairy intolerant.....one of life's cruel little jokes, but it is saving me money. LOL.
During the time from 2001-ish to 2009, I was "in the midst" of my Grave's Disease, and no Thyroid, and the Candida damaged my intestines with the resultant Leaky Gut Syndrome. I used Intestinal Repair Complex (it rethickens your intestinal lining), for 4 years to take care of that and was better around 2007. The Candida was controlled in about 10 months in around 2003. DURING that time, I was HIGHLY UPSET AND IRRITABLE...classic Thyroid. I was the poster child. I was affected by the toxins, etc...and my sensitivity to everything was a 100 out of 10!!! My STRESS was horrific. I was in a constant state of turmoil. I would cry at dropping a slab of butter. I would cry coming home from the doctors, who were basically no help. EVEN AFTER the Candida, and leaky gut syndrome were under control, and I was no longer taking some of the supplements, (I still take some supplements, as well as my Levoxyl, and GTA), I still had "MENTAL UPSET SYNDROME", you might say.....In other words, even though I was better physically, I was still a constant wretch of a human being. And I my sensitivity to emotional problems was a 10+ and beyond, and the STRESS was still horrific..... ALL TRUE....Upshot to this article is Probiotics did not help my mood, and I took a TON OF THEM!!!!
So, what happened? How did I get my EQUANIMITY back? Because I do have my calmness back, most assuredly. What worked for me?
There is a work called "Happiness Is No Charge". It describes a simple, easy, 1,2,3 step technique for taking down stress, and negative emotions, and gets you back into a nice calm state, (first time I used it), and does it relatively quickly. No Kidding. I had benefit from it immediately, and I have been using the technique for 2 and a half years now. I use it on "OLD" issues, and I use it when "NEW" issues arise. But generally it works to the point that an "issue" is over with!!!! That issue is taken care of. Example. Let's say I get frustrated. (Darn Computer). And I am LIVID about it. Stamping my feet!!! OOOOOOOO!!!!!! Frustrated. 10 out of 10!!!!!
OK, I do the technique, 1,2,3, maybe it takes 2 and a half minutes.....GONE!!!!! Back to being my usual calm self!!!!!! And it is over with....that means I do not think about it the rest of the DAY!!!! I don't have to "COPE" with it. Or "LIVE" with it.....it is GONE!!!!!! That is what this technique is like. Very beneficial....not to mean that tomorrow is not another day....it is....and I can get frustrated again over something else....BUT THE TECHNIQUE WILL WORK ON THAT TOO!!!!!! And it will be gone, and I don't have to deal with it anymore.
SO, if stress is getting to you, and nothing is helping, and you have tried EVERYTHING including Probiotics...then this might just do the trick. I have found it to be DEPENDABLE and CONSISTENT!
