Vitamin Therapy for Trigger Finger and Carpal Tunnel

Jim is a 46 year old retired New York policeman who uses power tools to repair his house. His problem is chronic pain at the base of the thumb and wrist. The pain worsens with use of the hand, making it difficult to use the power tools. Other repetitive motions cause pain such as turning a key in a lock, unscrewing the lid of a jar, and opening the car door. Jim also has "trigger finger" involving the thumb joint, and at night, before sleep he notices tingling and numbness in the hands.

Conventional Treatment - Steroid Injection and Splint

Jim's hand pain worsened lately, so he went to a hand surgeon who gave him a steroid injection at the base of the thumb and applied a hand/wrist splint. These measures were ineffective, and his pain continued. The surgeon suggested operation. Jim came into the office to ask if anything else could be done to avoid surgery.

P-5-P, Vitamin B6, Pyridoxine for Trigger Finger

As it turns out, there is a simple and effective vitamin therapy for Jim's Trigger Finger hand condition called Pyridoxine, vitmin B6. Jim was given a bottle of pyridoxine phosphate (the activated form) and 3 weeks later, an amazed Jim returned to report that his pain and swelling is gone, and his trigger finger had also resolved. He no longer needs the operation.

John Ellis MD, The Doctor Who Looked At Hands

I first leaned of B6 for carpal tunnel from reading Dr Jonathan Wright's 2005 newsletter mentioning Dr. John Ellis, a Texas physician in the 1960's who discovered that vitamin B6 eliminates carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, and other hand conditions.

Examine the backs of your hands. Have you ever noticed the backs of your hands are puffy and swollen, making the tendons obscured? Are your hands so swollen that you cant touch your palms with the tips of your fingers? That’s the positive “Ellis sign,” indicating extra B6 could be helpful. Usual dosage is 20 milligrams three times daily of the activated P-5-P form of B6. Old copies of Dr. Ellis’ book "The Doctor Who Looked at Hands" originally written in 1966, are still available.

I just love how real vitamins and minerals comes to the rescue, yes folks I mentioned REAL vitamins, we need to be aware that some vitamins sold are almost like a placebo, we have to find out which ones are absorbed well in our system, therefore making our bodies harmonious. JAM

I used B6 in my clinic for over twenty years. It should be the first treatment of choice for all carpal tunnel and pain syndromes in hands and wrists, also where there is 'lack of strength' in the hands - which may also be a very early symptom of much greater underlying nutritional problems which could lead to even worse physical health problems as well as psychological/psychiatric type disorders such as anxiety, depression, bi-polar or schizophrenia. A good in-depth nutritional survey by a qualified Naturopathic or Nutritional doctor would be advised (N.D., N.M.D. or Nutritionist) would be recommended. In the meantime - eat a lot more quick stir-fried mixed vegetables including Asian varieties which will put a halt to a lot of problems for a start.

As prescribed, my husband used a compounded progesterone cream on the top of his hands that had minimal affect... and symptoms all returned as soon as he stopped these applications. What is the difference between that treatment and use of this P5P- B6?

I used vit B6 therapy on my partener for carpal after his dad & sister had unsuccessful ops. That was 2 years ago - disappeared & has not recurred. He had been magnesium deficient for many years & apparently connected to vit B absorption.

The carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that causes pain, numbness and the tingling in the fingers or hands, particularly the thumb, index, middle or the ring fingers. Loss of the sensation in fingers and weakness in the hands can also occur. The eight natural remedies are acupuncture, acupressure, vitamin B6, herbal medicine and supplements, yoga and carpal tunnel syndrome, chiropractic, feldenkrais and the hellerwork. Trigger finger is a common disorder of the hand which causes a painful snapping or locking of the fingers or thumb.
