What Chasteberry Can Do For Your Health

Dear Dr. Cutler,

A friend of mine told me the other day that her grandson uses chasteberry to help with his acne problem. Is this really a benefit of chasteberry? And what other uses does it have?

—Edith T.

Dear Edith,

Chasteberry is an herb that can be used by both young men and women to help reduce acne. But it’s also used by women to ease menstrual problems and stimulate breast milk production. Plus, it’s thought to improve female hormone problems and boost fertility, as well.

I am a Registered Dietitian. i just wanted to add that Chasteberry is used for PCOS and can normalize the androgens that cause acne (same androgens can also interfere with ovulation hence the PCOS) so it be helpful for teenagers acne (which is often hormonal) as well as perimenopausal acne. A lower glycemic diet can also help both acne and PCOS as well. (documented with new studies)

Chasteberry(also called vitex or agnus castix) was a lifesaver for me many years ago--I was suffering from near psychotic PMS and was also trying to get pregnant again after a very early miscarriage. It worked all the way around!
